For years, automobile owners of different makes and models have been able to find out what options, standard equipment and packages their vehicles originally came with from the factory through the help of equipment codes, usually located on a decal or a slip of paper somewhere on or in the vehicle. Some owners have had the ability to take those codes and figure out how many vehicles were made just like that one in a given model year. This has been very common practice with Corvette owners as well as other muscle cars from the 60’s and 70’s. With the recent popularity of auto auctions on TV, you may have heard terms like “1 of 10 in this color”, “1 of 13 with this engine” or other similar expressions relating to equipment options. Knowing how many or how few of a particular vehicle were built can play a critical role in its value. Since their introduction, the GMC Syclone (1991) and GMC Typhoon (1992 & 1993) have had a bit of a mystery behind them, especially the Typhoons when it came to knowing how many of a particular color existed. Many people have spent thousands of hours tracking down, recording and documenting trucks that were known to exist, it was through this research that a general idea of color popularity was obtained. However the unknown trucks, the ones that were purchased and put into storage, the ones that were wrecked or stolen or parted out years ago, never to be seen again, are the ones that have limited the true numbers to be calculated.
Recently, some new documentation has appeared thanks to the help of a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Decoding website called Compnine.com. Once you enter your VIN into their database, it will come up with a list of the option codes your vehicle was produced with from the factory. Not only that, but Compnine also included a drag and drop menu which enables you to carry over your options and compare them with other vehicles of the same make and model produced that year. The more options you drag over, the fewer vehicles are likely to be calculated out to have those exact options.
For the interested viewers of my blog, I will do the breakdown of the option codes for my 1993 GMC Typhoon. The Typhoon option itself already makes the vehicle pretty rare, but you will see how some of the other options come into play as they are added to the list. There are also many other “options” which are really standard for the particular vehicle but are still documented on the equipment list for the vehicle.
For the 1993 model year, there were 7,191 trucks produced based on the GMC Jimmy 2-Door SUV. That number will decrease as the options are added below.
2,200 : Z79 – “TYPHOON” PERFORMANCE PACKAGE
A total 2,200 GMC Typhoons were produced in 1993. After this option, there are 55 equipment codes that are shared among all of the trucks produced, they can be seen in the table below.
2,198 : 1SF – PACKAGE OPTION 06
It is unknown what this package option is, but only 2 Typhoons were produced without it in 1993. Both of those trucks were special ordered from a dealer or other means.
2,197 : 1SZ – PACKAGE OPTION
It is also unknown what this package option is, but it is now known that 3 trucks left the factory without it. There is only 1 truck that has this option but does not have 1SF listed above, it was also a special ordered truck.
2,111 : TFE – SALES INCENTIVE – COMMITMENT PLUS
Not exactly sure what this means, but we do know there were 89 Typhoons made that did not have this sales incentive, that’s about it.
1,760 : SLM – SALES PROCESSING – STOCK ORDERS
This code means the vehicle was not special ordered. It was produced and shipped to dealership to be sold. There were 421 specially ordered Typhoons in 1993. The remaining 4 trucks consisted of 2 Pilot Vehicles, 1 Fleet Program Vehicle and 1 ??????.
532 : 12U – EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,WHITE
This code indicates the upper body color is Frost White. Although there were 647 with a white upper body, the others had a different lower body color.
442 : BYC – TRIM EQUIPMENT – EXTERIOR, WHITE
Trim equipment, this refers to the cladding color and is shown to be Frost White. Only trucks with the 12U code could have BYC, as the white cladding was only available on trucks with a white upper body. There were only 532 White/White Typhoons produced this year. There were 115 White/Grey trucks produced. It is a strange coincidence that the number above is 532, the same as the White/White production numbers.
342 : U1C – RADIO,AM/FM STEREO,CD PLAYER,ETR, CLOCK STEREO W/CD PLAYER
This indicates the truck came with a factory CD player. It is one of 342 trucks that had a CD player and the options above, however 1,663 Typhoons came equip with CD players that year.
164 : V54 – CARRIER,ROOF LUGGAGE(PAINTED)
Roof racks, although unpopular in terms of looks, were installed on 1,225 Typhoons in 1993.
28 : R7S – CONTROL SALES ITEM NO. 43
It may never be known what this code is really for. It does make the truck a little more exclusive, but without knowledge of what it’s for, it will not impact the trucks value. 466 trucks produced had this control sales item.
4 : NA6 – EMISSIONS SYSTEM, ALTITUDE REQUIREMENTS ALT EMIS / GQ1 – AXLE, REAR, STANDARD RATIO(MERCHANDISING OPTION)
I included NA6 & GQ1 on the same line because the addition of either option brings the truck down to “1 of 4″ status. Of the 28 trucks that remained before adding this option, 4 of them have both the NA6 & GQ1 codes. There were actually 101 trucks produced with the NA6 option and 102 with the GQ1 option, meaning only 1 truck exists with the GQ1 and does not have NA6 with it.
My truck was originally sold to a dealership in Littleton, CO, which explains the NA6 Emissions Equipment. It is unclear why GQ1 exists, as all trucks were equip with the same rear axle (as far as it’s known).
Here is a complete list of RPO Codes for my truck.
